Rendering of a leaked prototype of the Meta Quest 3 shows just how slimmer the Quest 2 successor could get.

We expect Meta Quest 3 to hit the market later this year. When exactly remains a mystery. The official unveiling will likely take place at Meta Connect 2023 in the fall. We don’t know anything about the specs from official sources.

Last October, YouTuber Brad Lynch leaked plans for a prototype that his sources say is the design Meta settled on for Meta Quest 3. Lynch had leaked plans for Meta Quest Pro months earlier. , which turned out to be correct in retrospect. So it’s entirely possible that Lynch is right again.

Numerous sensors on the front suggest that Meta has focused on color shifting and mixed reality. However, the sensors for gaze and face detection are nowhere to be found.

Wear ski goggles instead of shoe boxes thanks to pancake glasses

The Meta Quest 3 could use the same high quality pancake lentils like Meta Quest Pro (test). This new type of lens makes it possible to reduce the distance between the lenses and the screen. The result is a significantly smaller case. VR devices like Pico 4 (test) and HTC Vive XR Elite (info) already rely on pancake lenses and thus achieve a much narrower form factor.

Meta Quest Pro’s pancake lenses are based on a custom design. Meta reportedly worked on the design for four years and set up entirely new supply chains. It is therefore very likely that the same objectives will also be used in the Meta Quest 3.

The Shrinking Metaquest 3

3D artist and product designer Marcus Kane produced high-quality renders of the alleged Quest 3 prototype based on Lynch’s leaked blueprints. They show very well and in great detail what the helmet could look like – if Meta was really committed to this design.

If you compare the renders with images of the Quest 2, you can see how much smaller the Quest 3 case could be. This, in turn, should benefit the wearing comfort and appearance of the VR headset.

Seen from the side, the profile of the Meta Quest 3 also seems significantly narrower.

You can find these and other renders of the Quest 3 prototype on Marcus Kane’s Instagram profile. Brad Lynch also shared several renders via Twitter.

More information about the device can be found in our article Meta Quest 3: All the Facts and Rumors.
